was a Senior Fellow of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and of its Center for the American University, in connection with which he was also the Editor of MindingTheCampus.com, a web magazine that surveys the state of higher education in America and that is committed to the restoration of intellectual pluralism in academic life. He was in addition a Contributing Editor of City Journal, a quarterly magazine of urban affairs published by the Manhattan Institute. During the course of a long career in journalism he worked for such publications as Time magazine and The New York Times, and was formerly the author of the column On Society, which ran in the U.S. News and World Report for seventeen years and was syndicated in 140 newspapers. Among his books are Two Steps Ahead of the Thought Police and Incorrect Thoughts: Notes on Our Wayward Culture. His areas of interest included free speech, popular culture, higher education, and civil society.
