Dr John Tomasi

is a political philosopher who holds the posts of Professor of Political Science and Romeo Elton Professor of Natural Philosophy at Brown University. His work focuses on the intersection of economics with ethics and public policy and he became recognized as a leader in navigating the perceived fissure between social justice and free markets with his influential 2012 book Free Market Fairness. After completing the PhD in Economics at the University of Oxford and holding positions at Stanford and Princeton, Dr Tomasi settled at Brown, where he has won multiple teaching awards and where he founded the Political Theory Project, a research center which since 2003 has been a public forum for some of the world’s most esteemed political and economic thinkers.

Tomasi is a dominant voice in his field, regularly contributing chapters and articles to scholarly journals such as Social Philosophy & Policy and The Journal of Politics as well as mainstream publications such as The New York Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He is a member of the Council on the American Political Science Association and is on the boards of The Institute for Civil Society, The Institute for Humane Studies, and the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation. For his scholarship and continued contribution to his field he received the Charles G. Koch Prize and the Hayek Lecture Prize. In addition, Tomasi makes time to serve as a Research Associate at the Center for the Philosophy of Freedom at the University of Arizona and is currently finishing a book on the history of libertarianism.
