is a Principal Research Officer at the National Research Council in Canada. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from McGill University and a Master’s degree in Theoretical Biology from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining NRC in 2004, Dr Kuhn worked for the Centre de Recherche Informatique de Montréal and the Panasonic Speech Technology Laboratory in Santa Barbara, California. At the NRC he is part of the Multilingual Text Processing team, which created and commercialized the Portage suite of machine translation technologies. In November 2017, he was named project lead for NRC’s Indigenous Language Technology Project, which—in collaboration with Indigenous communities—applies natural language processing technologies to the revitalization of Canada’s Indigenous languages. Dr Kuhn’s previous research focused mainly on the fields of automatic speech recognition and machine translation. He has published over 75 papers in refereed journals and conferences, and holds 32 US patents. In his spare time, he writes novels such as his recent The Sixth Stage of Dying, which explores political and moral themes.
