Todd J. Zywicki

is George Mason University Foundation Professor of Law and a Senior Fellow of the Cato Institute. His areas of expertise include Bankruptcy Law, Law and Economics, and Consumer Lending; and he sees his detailed explications of the law as articulations of the foundational structure on which a free society depends. From 2020 - 2021 he was Chair of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Taskforce on Federal Consumer Financial Law, and in 2021 he was inducted into the American College of Consumer Financial Services Lawyers. Mr Zywicki has on many occasions provided expert testimony to the Congress of the United States, and has lectured and consulted with government officials around the world, including the European Union, Canada, and Japan. He also makes available his expertise in financial regulation to clients of the Chicago-based consultancy the Global Economics Group.

Zywicki has published more than 130 articles in leading law reviews as well as numerous commentaries in popular journals ranging fromthe  Wall Street Journal to National Review and Bloomberg. He has served as Senior Scholar of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, and as a Fellow at the International Center for Law and Economics, the Property and Environment Research Center, and the Goldwater Institute. He is, in addition, a trustee of many institutions, and has served as Co-Editor of the Supreme Court Economic Review. A devoted teacher, Mr Zywicki is deeply concerned about the present state of higher education, a topic he deftly explores in his 2019 book Unprofitable Schooling: Examining the Causes of, and Fixes for, America’s Broken Ivory Tower.
