(1955-2016) was the Director of the Division of Education Programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Prior to taking up his NEH appointment he was the twelfth President of Shimer College, a liberal arts college in Chicago the curriculum of which centers on the careful reading of the Great Books. Earlier in his career he taught expository writing at Harvard University for many years, worked for the American Academy for Liberal Education where he designed programs at the primary and secondary levels, and served as a consultant to a variety of organizations including the Massachusetts Board of Education, the John Templeton Foundation, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence, and the bipartisan education reform organization Achieve. His publications include Public Discourse and Academic Inquiry, a monograph concerned with rhetoric and the sociology of knowledge.
