Wholeness, Imagination, and the Cosmos with Dr Iain McGilchrist

Dr Iain McGilchrist stands as one of the preeminent thinkers of our age, a scholar whose profound insights into the divided brain illuminate the deepest currents of human history and culture.

Formerly a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr McGilchrist is the celebrated author of The Master and His Emissary and The Matter With Things, works that combine rigorous neuroscience with an unmatched depth of philosophical and cultural understanding. His intellectual courage and clarity of vision have placed him at the very forefront of efforts to understand the interplay between the hemispheric structures of the brain and the wider crisis of meaning, coherence, and value in contemporary life.

In 2024, Ralston College was honored to welcome Dr McGilchrist as the guest lecturer for the Sophia Lectures, our flagship series dedicated to exploring the perennial questions of truth, beauty, and human flourishing. His presence on campus was a vivid embodiment of our commitment to intellectual inquiry of the highest order, and his lectures electrified audiences with their breadth and brilliance. We are now thrilled to make these exceptional lectures available online, extending their transformative insights to a global audience hungry for the renewal of thought and spirit that such work inspires.

Lecture
1:
Division
and
Union

Dr Iain McGilchrist illuminates the profound interplay of division and union, revealing its role as the dynamic principle at the heart of all wholeness. Drawing on analogies from music, nature, and the dual hemispheres of the human brain, he demonstrates that separation and connection are not opposites but complementary forces—each essential to vitality and creativity. This harmony of opposites, a living synthesis far greater than the sum of its parts, mirrors Ralston College’s mission to reunify what modernity has fractured: the intellectual with the spiritual, the individual with the communal, the ancient with the urgent.

Lecture
2:
Symmetry
and
Asymmetry

Dr Iain McGilchrist explores the profound interplay between symmetry and asymmetry, demonstrating how they operate as complementary forces fundamental to the richness and creativity of existence. Through insights spanning physics, mathematics, biology, and art, McGilchrist demonstrates that asymmetry is not a flaw but a vital, generative principle—shaping growth, driving evolution, and animating the intricate dance of natural systems.

3:
Finitude
and
the
Infinite

Dr Iain McGilchrist reveals the transformative power of imagination as a gateway to understanding the profound interconnectedness of reality. Contrasting static, closed notions of infinity with a dynamic, unfolding vision, he argues that true engagement with life’s mysteries requires embracing an infinite process of becoming.
